About Burghley Horse Trials

Burghley Horse Trials is one of the world’s most prestigious equestrian events, combining elite sport with the spectacular setting of the Burghley Estate. First staged in 1961, the event has grown from just 19 competitors into one of the seven CCI5* events worldwide – the highest level of international eventing.

What makes Burghley so special is the unique combination of world-class competition, a challenging and iconic cross-country course, and the atmosphere of a major British sporting occasion. Alongside the action, visitors can explore extensive shopping avenues, hospitality and attractions, all set against the magnificent backdrop of Burghley House and its historic parkland.

Wednesday 1st September 2027

Trot-Up

Burghley gets underway with the traditional First Horse Inspection, as competitors present their horses to the Ground Jury. It’s an exciting first glimpse of the world-class field, with the horses assessed for fitness and soundness before the competition officially begins.

Thursday 2nd September 2027

Dressage – Day 1

The first day of competition sees the CCI5* field take to the Main Arena for Dressage. Riders and horses demonstrate precision, balance and harmony through a series of carefully choreographed movements, with every mark counting as the leaderboard begins to take shape.

Friday 3rd September 2027

Dressage – Day

The second day of Dressage continues as the remaining competitors take their turn in the Main Arena. Alongside the world-class competition, visitors can enjoy masterclasses and other equestrian entertainment, making Friday a fantastic day to experience the atmosphere of Burghley.

Saturday 4th September 2027

Cross Country

The excitement reaches another level on Saturday as competitors tackle Burghley’s renowned Cross Country course. Covering more than four miles and featuring 30 fences, this is the most demanding phase of the competition, testing the courage, speed and partnership of horse and rider.

Sunday 5th September 2027

Showjumping

The final day brings the competition to a thrilling conclusion with Showjumping in the Main Arena. Following the final horse inspection, riders must deliver clear, accurate rounds against the clock, with the final top 20 taking centre stage in the afternoon before the champion is crowned at the prize-giving.

Burghley Horse Trials Dress Code

There’s no strict dress code for spectators at Burghley Horse Trials, but a smart country style is very much at home at the event. As you’ll be spending plenty of time outdoors and walking across the parkland, comfortable, practical footwear is essential, while layers and a waterproof jacket are worth having to prepare for the changeable early-September weather. Burghley itself advises visitors to dress comfortably and wear suitable footwear for the terrain.
